Nestled in the heart of Bhuj, Hermann Gmeiner School stands as a symbol of hope and transformation for children from rural and underprivileged backgrounds. Within its walls, compassion and commitment blend seamlessly with education, a reflection of the school’s guiding philosophy under its newly appointed Principal, Mrs. Madhulika Joshi, who took charge just four months ago.

Having begun her career as a teacher, the Principal shared that her greatest satisfaction always came from helping students, a passion rooted in her philanthropic nature. “Becoming a principal gave me a larger platform to bring meaningful change,” she said, highlighting her ongoing efforts to address existing gaps within the school system. Her key focus areas include digital integration and the introduction of foreign languages, an ambitious step for students who mostly come from Gujarati-speaking, rural, or farming families.

Many of these children are parentless or single-parent, and their educational journey is often marked by social and economic challenges. Yet, what inspires the Principal every day is their growing enthusiasm to participate in school activities, especially among pre-primary students who are learning to communicate beyond their mother tongue. “Seeing them confidently express themselves in new languages gives us hope. It’s a bold change for both students and teachers,” she remarked. She also shared with pride that the Teacher’s Day Contest entries submitted by Gujarati-medium students in English received wide appreciation for their heartfelt and well-written articles on their teachers, which were published in the Education Thrive Teacher’s Day Special Issue.

The dedication of the teaching staff mirrors the Principal’s vision. One teacher shared that “storytelling has become a bridge between learning and imagination.” For many children, this creative approach transforms classroom concepts into memorable lessons. Teachers often go beyond academics, sometimes even preparing meals for students who cannot afford to bring tiffins. “Our bond with students is personal. One-to-one counselling helps us understand their struggles and support them better,” she added.

Despite curriculum pressures, the teachers firmly believe in quality over quantity. They emphasize the need for meaningful learning rather than rushing to finish the syllabus. Their care and consistency have earned them the love and respect of students, who fondly refer to them as “mummy.” The strong bond between teachers and pupils is evident when alumni return years later and bow, recognizing their mentors instantly, a testament to the lasting impact of their guidance.

The Principal also shared her balanced perspective on technology in education. While she encourages students to explore AI tools, she cautions against overreliance on digital devices. “Students must learn to think independently. Excess screen time can affect writing and creative thinking,” she explained. Her message to parents is equally heartfelt: “Never compare your child with others. Each one should compete only with oneself.”

Another represented the school in Storytelling at Kala Mahakumbh.
Music teacher Ms. Bharvi Vora secured 2nd position in Harmonium playing at the district-level Kala Mahakumbh.
In a three-day Interschool Garba competition, Hermann Gmeiner’s team of teachers and parents won 1st position (18+ category), while students earned 2nd position (age 12–18).
In the Interschool Drawing Competition, Nitesh Nathbava and Khushi won 2nd and 3rd prizes, respectively.
54 students proudly participated in the Kutch Carnival Programme, representing the school spirit with enthusiasm.
On World Moon Day, pre-primary students came dressed as little astronauts, filling the campus with imagination and excitement.
